Gate Won't Close
A gate that opens fine but won't close, or starts closing and reverses back open, is one of the most common calls we get, and it is almost always the safety system doing its job. That's good news: your gate is protecting against closing on a car, a pet, or a person, and the fix is usually straightforward.
Automatic gates are required to sense anything in their path and stop or reverse rather than close on it. The most frequent cause of a gate that won't close is a safety photo-eye - the little sensor beam across the opening - that has slipped out of alignment or gotten dirty. In Houston, that beam gets broken by all kinds of things: leaf litter and pine needles drifting across it, a spider web spun overnight, dust and pollen filming the lens, or the sensor bumped a few degrees out of aim by wind or a passing vehicle. When the gate thinks something is there, it refuses to close, exactly as designed.
Loop detectors are the other big culprit. Many driveways have a wire loop buried in the pavement that senses a vehicle and holds the gate open so it never closes on your car. When a loop or its detector board faults - often after ground movement in our clay soil cracks the loop, or a storm surge hits the board - it can read a phantom vehicle that never leaves, keeping the gate stuck open. We test the loop and detector to tell a real fault from a genuine obstruction.
Less often, the close side is a settings or mechanical issue. A close-limit switch that has drifted can stop the gate short or make it think it can't complete the cycle, and a gate that binds partway - on a dragging hinge, a gritty slide track, or an obstruction it physically hits - will reverse to protect itself. We check the sensors, the path, and the gate's travel together so the gate closes cleanly and stays safe.
You can help by wiping the photo-eye lenses clean and clearing leaves, branches, or debris from the opening and the sensor line. But never disable or bypass a safety sensor to force the gate shut - those devices are what keep the gate from closing on someone.
